Allegheny Cemetery is the oldest institution of its kind west of the Allegheny Mountains. The Cemetery was founded in 1844 and is the sixth rural incorporated cemetery in the United States. On December 10, 1980, the Cemetery was accepted on the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of its distinguished history and unique character.

Allegheny Cemetery is one of the largest cemeteries in the nation with 300 acres and 15 miles of paved roadways. Over 130,000 members of Pittsburgh's families are now resting in Allegheny Cemetery.
